New House Build

In November 2019, we broke ground for a new 4-bedroom house on our Nantucket property. Designed by Luke Thornewill of Thornewill Design, and built by Fraker Construction, the house is modest in scale but ambitious in concept because of the – set into a steep hill with a walk-out lower level, and requiring a new entrance to the property.

The house doesn’t have a large footprint, but it has lots of functional space for a structure of its size. And many corners and jogs for the carpenters to figure out!
There will be a covered porch, open deck with a pergola and a deck outside up the top-floor family room. All face Southeast. Rise and shine!
As seen from the North, looking into the slope, there will be a “coliseum” french-door entrance into to the bottom level.
Each of the three floors will have living space. Kids will be paroled to a bunkroom on the bottom level.

Progress Videos

It’s the first week of construction. Surveyors stake out the land. Large machine arrive to clear brush and scrape topsoil. An enormous shovel digs a hole. A 20-foot mountain of dirt and sand takes shape. The family contemplates erecting a chairlift and operating a ski-resort on the rise.
Jerry the Mason arrives, assembles the forms for the footings. Wayne the Concrete Man follows with the candystripe cement mixer and a pump truck with a 75-foot extension arm. Footings poured and hardened. Jerry and his crew then build the forms for the foundations. Wayne returns with the mixer, pump and many more cubic yard of concrete later, there is a finished foundation. Ready for framing.
The framing crew begins to take the structure vertical. Joists, beams, sheathing, LVL, TJI, Zip System, hardened fasteners – complex materials behind simple words. This piece takes the project through the completion of the main floor framing. top floor and roof next!
We’ve been blessed with a mild winter, so the framing of the new house has moved quickly. Only a few days lost to weather, but we’re just a few days away from being under full cover, which will make Bojan and his boys happy.
