Appalachian Spring

1,500 Miles through the heart of Appalachia.
Westerlunds, the morning before the launch.
Antietam: McClellan vs. Lee.
No winners; only losers. Nearly 23,000 casualties, 3,654 killed.
A lonely memorial to a fallen general.
Surveying the battlefields.
Bronzed glory?
High on a ridge in Western Maryland, where the wind blows.
The Prescott County Inn, Kingswood, WV. To be avoided.
Our digs at the PCI were a little dodgy. The room had all the luxuries - fridge, AC, cable TV. Plenty of company from bedbugs and mice, too.
Late afternoon break for a snack and a beer.
One of Americas finest comic actors: Don Knotts, a/k/a Deputy Barney Fife, paragon of law enforcement. Morgantown, WV.
His star graces the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but Morgantown's homage may mean more.
Airhawk seat cushion...relief for fanny fatigue.
Blacksville, WV. Could use a paint job.
Making a statement. Grrr.
Grandma Jo's Polka Dot Cafe - the home of a 2 lb grilled cheese made with genuine Velveeta.
You are now entering Ohio.
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - which engaged several generations of Constable attorneys.
Railcar. Marietta, Ohio.
Fedex doesn't pick up here.
Mullens, VW. A coal country town that has seen better times.
Obama made no friends in the coal mining towns of West Virginia. Declaring that coal was "dead" didn't win him any votes.
Eckman, WV. A hard-hit town trying to make a go of it by attracting the ATV crowd.
